How NOT to Build with Pavers - Why They FAIL!

Speaker 1: You took it from me last week, I remember.

Speaker 2: There's no doubt that pavers make the absolute best road based material available period, hands down. History has proven it. There's been roads built out of pavers and stones that have been around since 2500 B.C. Now you can't say the same thing for asphalt or concrete, but pavers are subject to three typical kinds of failure. Rotational failure, vertical failure and horizontal failure. We're going to cover those, so hopefully you can prevent them and build your own driveway, that'll last maybe not 2500 years but it'll last longer than you or me both.

Speaker 2: Now in the past you've seen me make a video talking about how about the base is the absolute most critical element to the overall success of your project and this still holds true. But for pavers, it goes a little bit further than that. If you happen to have an asphalt or a concrete driveway, we're going to cover some of the similarities in failures that you...

Building a Big Staircase Over a Landscape Retaining Wall & Connecting it with a Bridge to a Patio

Speaker 1: So the story starts out, we built these beautiful boulder retaining walls on this property that we're going to sell. And after we get the walls all done, my wife looks at me and says, "Well those look nice, but how's anybody going to get up to the upper patio if they want to get there from the driveway?"

Speaker 1: You could've said something before I had the walls finished, Honey.

Speaker 1: And so I looked at Frank, and I said, "Hey, let's build some stairs over the retaining wall, and then let's build a bridge to the patio."

Speaker 1: Now normally guys, I don't like to build stairs over. I kind of like to build them through and incorporate them in, so I want to hear from you on this video as you watch it, let me know. Do you like this idea? Do you like this design? Good, bad, or in between, lay it on me. I just want your guys' opinion on this one.

Speaker 1: Oh here's another fun thing I do Guys. On today's video I take all of Frankie's tools and I ask him, "Just use...

Part 1 - How to Build a Patio - Ultimate DIY Installation Guide

Part 3 - How to Build a Fire Pit - Stupidly Easy!

Seat Walls & Columns

We're building seat walls and columns today. That's right, we're going to give you all of the skills, the tools that you're actually going to need from start to finish to put this project together. What would be really cool is if we could just have installed this project for you, but this isn't a dream so wake up. When we started, we had our questions.  Questions?! We actually had no clue what we were doing. We've never seen this wall system before in our lives, but we figured it out and we want to show you how simple this system is to actually put together. Yeah, you just have to be able to run a skid loader and a chop saw and other heavy equipment. No big deal, right? Yesterday at this time, this was barren dirt, now you're just bragging, I think I need a weed whip. And a new bench. Today we have a 16 x 16 patio installed, and...

Part 2 - How to Build Patio Seat Walls & Columns DIY

Part 3 - How to Build a Fire Pit - Stupidly Easy!

Stan:

Belgard is sponsoring a three part mini-series on how to install seat walls, columns, a patio like this, and a fire ring. Sponsored means: Belgard asked me very nicely (“you mean with money??”) to put together the most comprehensive patio installation guide that's ever been created, ever! But we're going to go even deeper down the rabbit hole than just talking about technical details, we’re going to talk about cost.

Phil:

We're going to give you everything you need from start to finish on how to build this. You’re probably wondering what type of help do I need, what type of tools do I need. We're going to tell you, step by step what it's going to take to complete this project. Stan: There is no chance I can get all that done in one video. That's a good excuse to subscribe. Now you prep the base, tell me exactly what you did? Phil: To...

Belgard Paver Patio

About a week ago, I shared a video with you about a patio that was behind a retaining wall where we were doing some water proofing. A comment was made to please keep you updated on the project status. So, here it is. Here's the update. The job is complete. I meant to do a shot in the middle of it, but we moved pretty fast on this project. So last time you saw this job, the ground was down and we had excavated behind the retaining wall where we were putting in our drainage and we were waterproofing everything. Well now, this paver patio is complete and you get an idea of what everything looks like and how it turned out.  We had an elevation change that brought this new patio up to the level of the deck stairs which I think looks great.  It actually had 3 more deck stairs coming down before,  so here's a shot of the finished paver patio.

Outdoor Fire Pit & Patio

Outdoor Fire Pit & Patio

Hi everyone! This is Phil and I want to walk you through this outdoor living space project. This is a warm inviting fire pit patio area that sits about 250ft off of the back of the house. We begin with a slate chip stone pathway that's coming right in through here as an entrance path.  We've got it lined with really nice landscape lights over from Volt Lighting which are available online. It's just a great quality lighting fixture that's less expensive than some of the premium manufacturers. They eliminate a lot of the sales and marketing and sell direct.  So you can buy them directly from Volt Lighting.

We wanted a natural and rustic feel, so we selected large Tennessee fieldstone step treads to look irregular and give it the feel that those stones were found on the property and were placed here.  We've got the stack stone seating. All the Tennessee stacked stone are hand chipped. If we get a close-up on the surface look, you will notice...

How to Build a Patio - An easy Do it Yourself Project

Today we're giving you some professional tips and techniques to help you build an amazing backyard patio of your own and it's all about the base and nothing to do with the bricks.  This means we're building a cutlass paver patio and we're going to show you how to do the same. So, let's get into it.

Base Material

We're going to divide the base into three distinct categories, the first category is what we call the sub base and that is the raw soil.  How to prepare that? What to look for? And what you're going to need to know to make sure that when you lay your patio now, it looks the same ten years from now. The second category is what we call the imported base material.  That's what you use to separate the sub base from your pavers.  The third category of base material is your sand base or your screed rail, and there may be a little bit of controversy on this last point.

Sub-base: Soil

Let's look at the sub base material or the raw soil. This is the most...

Timber Retaining Wall, Artificial Turf, Belgard Paver Patio

Week 1

We are about one week into a major renovation project and we are working on by far the most dangerous hillside we have ever worked on. I want to try to give you an idea of what we're working on. If you look at how steep the slope behind me is, so we've got a two-tier retaining wall.  We have our lower tier behind me that extends up about 6ft tall. This entire slope was very steep and covered in a rose or control plants that have large evergreen trees on it. We've created this middle level area which is 14ft deep and then we've built the second reinforced timber retaining wall. This middle terrace is going to go to the blue lines behind you. That is going to be a putting green.  This putting green is going to be a pretty awesome feature.  Around the outside of this putting green is going to be a rock or chipping area. This is the part that makes me nervous. Every time it comes down, I can't help but hold my breath. It's been in and out about 60 times.  But...
